Pirates 2015 Season Preview

The Pirates return 14 players from their SCCBL 2015 regular season co-championship team.

Former SCCBL all-stars Andrew Alvarez, Kyle Jackson, Jonny Reynoso, Anthony Virgen and Nathan Virgen are all back to help the club improve to the next level after last season’s successful 26-8 finish.

Alvarez posted gaudy numbers, while dominating the competition in 2014. The Houston Baptist senior-to-be earned Pitcher of the Month honors in June, while finishing 5-0 with a 2.42 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. Pirates Drop Wild SCCBL Championship Game 1

pirates gm 30On Tuesday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona, the pitcher of the month in June, Andrew Alvarez was set to duel the pitcher of the month in July for the Power, Morgan Earman. Surely runs would be at a premium.

That’s why they play the games.

The Pirates (26-7, 12-4) fell 18-13 to the Palm Springs Power (35-8, 12-4) in a game that was completed on Wednesday at Palm Springs Stadium after Game 1 was suspended due to darkness on Tuesday. Continue reading “Pirates Drop Wild SCCBL Championship Game 1”

Pirates Take Game 1 vs SD

pirates gm 27The Pirates (24-6, 11-4) defeated Team San Diego (23-18, 7-8) 7-2 in Game 1 of the double dip Friday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Pirates Conquer Legends

pirates gm 24The Pirates (21-5, 10-4) conquered the Long Beach Legends 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Long Beach City College.

The story of the game was the two D-1 pitchers for the Pirates, Andrew Alvarez (5-0) and Jordan Scheftz (SV 2), shutout the Legends. Alvarez tossed the first five innings, while Scheftz closed out the final four. Continue reading “Pirates Conquer Legends”

Pirates Blank Dodgers

pirates gm 23The Pirates (20-5, 10-4) defeated the East LA Dodgers 4-0 Tuesday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

It was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but that’s when the Pirate bats awakened.

Kyle Jackson singled and scored on an RBI knock by Alec Morabito to make it 1-0. Jason Padlo scored Morabito on a single to left field that increased the lead to 2-0. Continue reading “Pirates Blank Dodgers”

Pirates Top Bucs in Game 1

pirates gm 14The Pirates (11-3-1, 3-2) toppled the Bucs (3-11, 2-7) 3-1 in Game 1 of the double header Saturday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Pirates scored quickly in the first when Fernando Escobar scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

6 is the Magic Number for the Pirates

pirates gm 12The magic number for the Pirates (10-3, 2-2) against the East L.A. Dodgers was six in game one of the double dip on Tuesday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

Inland Valley scored six runs in the sixth inning en route to a 9-2 victory.

The Dodgers actually took a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but that’s when the offensive fireworks exploded for the men in red. Continue reading “6 is the Magic Number for the Pirates”

Pirates Plunder Power

pirates gm 9The Pirates (8-2, 1-1) defeated the Palm Springs Power (9-1, 1-1) 4-3 Wednesday night at Palm Springs Stadium.

Andrew Alvarez continued his outstanding play with a 2-for-4 day including an RBI and a run scored. In addition to the stellar job at the plate, Alvarez dominated the opposition on the bump. He struck out six in eight excellent innings.

Jack Johnson slammed the door in the ninth and earned the save, while getting out of a bases loaded jam by striking out Jake Howeth. Continue reading “Pirates Plunder Power”

Power Surge Too Much for Pirates

pirates gm 8The Pirates (7-2, 0-1) fell 8-2 to the Palm Springs Power (9-0, 1-0) at Palm Springs Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Andrew Alvarez scoring Greg Espinosa, but the Power answered with two in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Palm Springs added four in the fourth and two more in the sixth to increase their lead to 8-1.

Pirates and Bucs Season Preview

Taylor Valentine posted gaudy numbers, while dominating the competition in 2013. The Cal State San Bernardino senior-to-be earned Pitcher of the Year honors while finishing 5-0 with a 0.66 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 40.2 innings.
