Pirates Walkoff on Surf

Late inning heroics lifted the Pirates to a 6-5 victory over the Orange County Surf on Tuesday afternoon at Scolinos Field.

The Surf got out to an early lead with an unearned run in the very first inning.

The Pirates scored the equalizer in the bottom of the fourth when Alec Petrone came home on an RBI groundout by Mario Micketti.

However, the Surf immediately answered right back with three runs in the top half of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, JP Hopkins brought the Pirates a run closer with an RBI double, cutting the lead to 4-2.

The momentum was short-lived, as, much like in the fifth inning, the Surf answered the Pirates run with a run of their own in the top of the seventh, pushing the lead back to three.

The Pirates, however, responded right back in the bottom of the seventh. With two on and one out, Quinn Cooper drilled a two-run double into the gap in left-center, cutting the lead to 5-4.

Pirates reliever, Art Corona, retired the Surf in order, in both the eighth and ninth inning to keep the Pirates within a run heading into their last at-bat.

The bottom of the ninth started out with a bang as Jonathan De Marte led off the inning by crushing the first pitch he saw from closer, Josh Devries, over the left field fence for a game-tying solo home run. A few batters later, Brennan McKenzie came up with two outs and the winning run on second and delivered with a walk-off RBI single.

Pirates starter, Sean Patton, pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs (only three of them earned) on four hits while striking out four.

The victory moved the Pirates to 5-2 in league play and moved them into a first place tie with the Surf.

The Pirates will be in action again on Friday, when the Solana Beach Cardinals visit Scolinos Field. Game time is 6:00 PM.

Bucs Drop Heartbreaker to Force

The Inland Valley Bucs (8-4, 2-2) fell 9-5 in a wild game at Madison High School against the Force that saw them erase two four-run deficits.

The Bucs made three errors in the first inning and allowed four unearned runs falling behind 4-0.

After getting one run back in the second, the Force responded with another run in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-1.

Inland Valley crept closer with one more run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Michael Mora that scored Jake Scott.

The Bucs tied the game in the fifth as Justin Gomez blasted a three-run homer over the right field fence.

The score remained 5-5 until the bottom of the eighth when the Force went on a two-out rally and Nick Zaharion cranked the go-ahead RBI.

Pirates Play to 8-8 Tie

The Inland Valley Pirates battled the Gamers to an 8-8 tie on Tuesday evening at Scolinos Field.

The Pirates came back from a 5-0 deficit, taking advantage of several Gamer miscues.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Gamers put three runs on the board against Pirates starter Charlie Verrone.

The next inning the Gamers put up two more runs the take a 5-0 lead. The stymied Pirate offense finally broke out in the bottom of the sixth.

With runners on first and third and one out, an errant pickoff throw allowed Jacob Blackiston to score from third, putting the Pirates on the scoreboard. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Landon Marshall socked a two-run double over the left fielders head to cut the deficit to 5-3. Two batters later, Jake Bryant came in to score on a wild pitch for the fourth run of the inning.

The score remained 5-4 until the top of the eighth inning, when the Gamers put up a three spot to push their lead to 8-4.

However, the never say die, Pirates answered right back in their half of the eighth. Anthrowing error by the Gamers’ shortstop plated Jacob Blackiston for the first run of the inning. Later, Jahshua Jones came in to score the second run of the inning on a throwing error by the Gamers third baseman. The next batter, Koby Glass, drove in a run with an RBI groundout, bringing the Pirates within a run of the gamers. Then with two outs and runners on first and third, pinch runner, Aaron Torres scampered home on a wild pitch to tie the game at eight.

After holding the Gamers scoreless in the ninth, the Pirates managed to load the bases with one out in their half of the inning. Unfortunately for the Pirates, they were unable to bring that winning run home from third and the game concluded in a draw.

Landon Marshall was the standout offensively, driving in three of the Pirates’ eight runs. Charlie Verrone turned in a quality outing, giving up just three runs over four innings. Aaron Bernal and Sean Patton both pitched scoreless relief.

The Pirates will hoist anchor on Thursday, as they draw swords with the South Bay Sliders at El Camino College. Game time is 5:00 PM.
