Pirates Fall in Nightmare 9th Inning

The Inland Valley Pirates were defeated by the Long Beach Legends in a non-conference matchup at Scolinos Field by a score of 8-5.

The Legends got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. The Legends scored another run in the top of the seventh to make it a 2-0 game.

The Pirates offense, which had been held to one hit through the first six innings, finally came alive in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Charlie Verrone stepped into the box and promptly unloaded the bases with a three-run double to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Pirates tacked on two more runs, as back-to-back wild pitches chased home Landon Marshall and Jahshua Jones, giving the Pirates a 5-2 lead heading into the ninth inning.

However, it was the Legends, who had the final say, as they scored six runs in the top of the ninth to go up by a score of 8-5. The Legends set down the Pirates in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.

Aaron Bernal got the start for the Pirates and turned in three shutout innings.

The Pirates will try to quickly rebound as they head into a very important conference series against the South Bay Sliders. The first of those two games takes place on Friday at El Camino College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.

Bucs Finish Tourney 3-0

The Inland Valley Bucs (15-9) were well on their way to a 10-run mercy rule in the top of the seventh with an 11-1 lead, but struggled to close it out as the Mission Trails Jackrabbits plated seven in the frame.

Inland Valley held on to win 12-10 at Grossmont College Sunday afternoon.

The Bucs scored first in the first inning on a Nic Hernandez RBI single.

Jake Scott belted an RBI single of his own in the second to make it 2-0.

The Bucs tallied another in the third to extend the lead to 3-0 on an RBI double by Sheldon Borson.

Inland Valley plated three more in the fifth as they doubled up the score to 6-0. Todd Yost, Borson and Dylan Lowenstein each produced one RBI in the inning.

The Bucs broke it open in the sixth scoring five more times to grab an 11-1 lead. Brad Lewis had an RBI single, Aaron McCann ripped a two-run single and Yost belted a two-run triple.

In the top of the seventh, seven runs scored for the Jackrabbits, who cut the deficit to 11-8.

Inland Valley scored once more in the eighth on McCann’s third RBI of the game and held on for dear life to take it by the final 12-10 margin.

Matt Goytia was sensational facing the minimum batter he could face in his five innings of work. He only allowed one hit and struck out seven. Jonathan Hopkins earned the save finishing out the final two innings.

Pirates Can’t Keep Pace

The Inland Valley Pirates (8-12-1) were defeated by the Arroyo Seco Sentinels in a non-conference match up at Scolinos Field by a final score of 15-3.

The Sentinels got on the board first with a run in the first inning off of starter and reigning SBL pitcher of the week, Kyle Wade.

Not to be outdone, the Pirates answered right back in the bottom of the first. With two on and two out, Justin Katz singled to drive in Alberto Vargas and tie the game at one. One batter later, JP Hopkins came home on a wild pitch, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead. The Pirates stretched their lead to 3-1 when Katz came home on an RBI single by Quinn Cooper.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Sentinels would take over, beginning in the third inning when they put up three runs to take a 4-3 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Sentinels put the game away scoring nine runs on eight hits to take a commanding 13-3 lead.

The Sentinels tacked on two more in the sixth inning and went on to win by a final count of 15-3.

Despite the offensive onslaught, pitchers, Jake Geck, Conlan McKenzie, Schuyler Bates and Justin Katz managed to turn in a scoreless outing in their inning of work.

The Pirates will have a chance to regroup over the All-Star break. They resume play on Thursday, July 7 against the Long Beach Legends. Game time is set for 6:00 PM.
