Bucs lose in extras to Bombers 2-1

The Inland Valley Bucs (8-11-1) lost 2-1 in 10 innings to the SoCal Bombers Wednesday night at Scolinos Field.

Gavin Velasquez made his first start of the season for the Bucs. The Cal State Fullerton right hander shutout the Bombers through the first six innings. SoCal finally broke through in the seventh when Joey Magro delivered a two-out bases loaded RBI single to put the Bombers up 1-0.

The lead didn’t last long as the Bucs tied it in the bottom of the eighth. Ramiro Velasco scored on a wild pitch from SoCal pitcher Dylan Simcik to tie the game.

Ryan Knowles led off the top of the 10th with a single. He reached second on a ground out. Inland Valley’s defensive miscues finally caught up with them. On a routine ground ball Logan Lannon couldn’t handle the throw from first baseman Jacob Doty allowing Knowles to score the winning run.

It was the fifth error of the game committed by Inland Valley.

The Bucs saw their three game winning streak come to an end.

Pirates fall behind early and lose 7-5 to Colton Nighthawks

The Inland Valley Pirates (7-8-1) lost 7-5 to the Colton Nighthawks Tuesday night at Cal Poly Pomona.

Andre Henson got the start for the Pirates. The left hander went four innings, allowed six hits, and four earned runs.

Ryan Whithorn led the Inland Valley offense going 2-2 with a run scored.

The Pirates have now lost a season high four straight.

Inland Valley returns to league play on Tuesday visiting the Solana Beach Cardinals.

Pirates drop both games of double header to Ventura County

The Inland Valley Pirate dropped both games Sunday Afternoon against the first place Ventura County Pirates. With both losses, the Pirates are now 6-6 in league and 7-8-1 overall on the season.

The first game was an offensive game as the final score was 11-9. Ventura County would take the early game 4-0 by scoring two runs in the first and second innings but the home team Pirates would score two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning. After Dylan McDowell would work a leadoff walk, Matt Manskar would get a double. With runners on second and third, Christian Lopez would get a sac fly to score McDowell. Hunter Cooper would then bring home Manskar on an error to make the game 4-2.

Ventura County would then add another run in the third inning but the IV Pirates would come right back with three runs of their own to make the game 6-6. Manskar and Lopez would each contribute doubles in this inning to tie the game up. After Ventura County would score two more over the next two innings, the IV Pirates would end up tying the game 8-8 heading into the 7th. Ventura County would then add three more runs to take the lead 11-8 and the Pirates would only be able to add one more run in the 8th on a Justin Katz single to make it 11-9. This would be the final score as both teams were held scoreless in the 9th.

In the second game of the double header, Ventura County starter Robert Stowell was the story for most of the game. He had a perfect game broken up when he hit Dylan McDowell to lead off the sixth inning. With Ventura County leading 1-0, Inland Valley would then get their first hit by Michael Piniero in the top of the 7th. Jacob Taylor would follow this with another hit. After a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Whithorn would  hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1. Jacob Taylor would then steal third base and the catcher would throw the ball into left field and Taylor scored to make the game 1-2 Inland Valley.

Down 1-2 heading into the ninth, Ventura County would add two runs off Inland Valley pitcher Christian Lopez to take the lead 3-2. Ventura County would then hold the Pirates scoreless in the ninth for the win.

Bucs make it two in a row against Bulldogs

Riverside Bulldogs couldn’t keep up with Inland Valley Bucs and fell 9-2 on Saturday as the Bucs make it two in a row against the Bulldogs. With the win the Bucs moved to 5-6 in league while to Bulldogs moved to 2-12.

After falling behind 1-0, the Bucs exploded for 7 runs in the fourth inning. The Bucs would bring eleven batters to the plate that inning while getting 5 hits. Two of those hits would go to Aaron McCann as he also had two RBIs this inning. Overall,  McCann wouldo lead his team with four hits and three RBIs. Jordan Hernandez would also contribute 3 RBIs while collecting two hits.

The Bucs pitching staff would hold the Bulldogs to two runs on only four hits. Sean Patton would get the win while going four innings while giving up one run and striking out 6. Three Bucs pitchers would then combine to go the next five innings and would only give up one run on one hit.

Bucs beat Bulldogs 3-2 to make it two in a row

The Inland Valley Bucs and Riverside Bulldogs played a back and forth affair on Friday night, but the Inland Valley Bucs eventually prevailed 3-2 after taking the lead for good in the sixth inning. The game was tied at two with Inland Valley Bucs batting in the bottom of the sixth when Aaron McCann doubled off of Ryan Daugherty, driving in the go ahead run.

The Bucs and Bulldogs would each score runs in the second and fourth. Johnny Juarez would single in the second and eventually come home to score on a passed ball while Patrick Vizcaino would score in the fourth on a double play.

Bucs pitching was sharp all night as 4 pitchers would combine to only allow five hits and two walks while striking out five. Erik Cha made his first start for the Bucs and allowed one run in three innings on one hit and two walks. Brandon Godoy, Adrian Guzman and Logan Lannon would only allow one run the rest of the way with Guzman picking up the win and Lannon picking up the save with a one, two, three ninth inning.

Pirates lose to Orioles 4-2

Inland Valley Pirates watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 4-2 loss to Orange County Orioles on Friday afternoon. The Pirates fall to 6-4 in Sunset League action with the loss.

Inland Valley Pirates took the early lead in the first inning after Jahshua Jones lead  off the game with  a double and then was driven in 4 batters later. This would be the only run the Pirates would score until the 9th inning as Orioles starter John Beltran would keep the Pirates offense at bay for seven and two-thirds innings. He only allowed one run on seven hits while striking out eight. 

Jake Bryant would get the loss for the Pirates. He started on the mound for the Pirates and only allowed one hit but walked five while allowing 2 runs. Control was an issue all afternoon as 6 pitchers combined to walk 11 Orioles.

After allowing 2 runs in the top of the 9th, the Pirates tried mounting a comeback but were stopped while only scoring run and leaving a runner stranded at third.

Bucs fall to Bombers 8-3

The Inland Valley Bucs lost 8-3 at home to the SoCal Bombers on Tuesday night.

The Bombers jumped all over Bucs starter Hayden Pearce in the top of first. Pearce retired the first batter of the game and then allowed eight straight hitters to reach safely. SoCal scored six times in all and the Bucs never recovered.

SoCal catcher Chris Sandberg led way offensively going 3-4 with an RBI.

The two teams are right back at it on Wednesday from Cal Poly Pomona.

Pirates come from behind to beat Cardinals 4-3

 

The Inland Valley Pirates scored 48 runs in their last five games heading into Tuesday’s contest with the Solana Beach Cardinals. For seven innings they were held in check before a 4-3 come from behind victory.

The Pirates got on the board in the first courtesy of Spencer Max’s wild pitch that allowed Brandon Bradshaw to score. After that Inland Valley’s bats went silent.

Solana Beach grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth when Ari Gerber and Frankie Scalzo delivered back to back two-out RBI doubles.

Michael Benson came through for the Cardinals with another two-out RBI double that made it 3-1 after six.

Still trailing by two runs heading into the eighth the Bucs began the comeback. Inland Valley scored three times on just two hits. They were aided by a throwing error which allowed two runs to score.

Pirates get back to winning ways versus OC Surf

The Inland Valley Pirates got back to their winning ways on Monday night. The Pirates hammered the Orange County Surf 11-3 at Scolinos Field and  have now won four out of their last five games.

Michael Gomez was outstanding in his first home start of the season. The right hander threw five scoreless innings, allowed four hits, and struck out six.

The Pirates offense continued to put big numbers.. They came in having scored 37 runs in their last four games. Inland Valley roughed up Orange County’s bullpen scoring all 11 runs against four different relievers.

Maryland bound Michael Piniero led way going 3-3 with 4RBI’s.

The Pirates are back at home on Tuesday hosting the Solana Beach Cardinals.

Pirates split doubleheader with Sparrows

The Inland Valley Pirates split a doubleheader against the South Bay Sparrows on Saturday. The Pirates took the opening game 15-13 and the Sparrows won game two 5-4.

In the opener thirteen different Pirate players collected hits. Allen Dong led way offensively going 3-4 with 3 RBI.

Inland Valley trailed by a run going into the bottom of the eighth. However, the Pirates rallied to regain the lead scoring four times. Justin Katz had a key hit delivering an RBI single.

Game two was a much different story. South Bay starting pitcher Daniel Rubio silenced the Pirates bats holding Inland Valley to a run on one hit through the first five innings.

The Pirates trailed 5-1 heading into the sixth. That’s when inland Valley broke through against the South Bay bullpen scoring three times to pull within a run. But, Sparrows reliever Eli Edwards pitched a perfect ninth to slam the door on Inland Valley’s three game winning streak.
