Pirates Overcome by the Riptide

The Inland Valley Pirates were defeated by the Orange County Riptide in a non-conference contest on Sunday at Scolinos Field by a score of 6-1.

The Pirates offense was stymied by the Riptide pitching, mustering only one run on five hits in the contest.

The Riptide jumped on the board early thanks to an unearned run in first inning off of Pirates starter, Breion Barron.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Riptide tacked on another run to push the lead to two.

The Pirates scored their sole run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out, RBI single by second basemen, Koby Glass.

However, the Riptide answered right back with four runs in the top the eighth, to put the game away for good as they held on for the 6-1 victory.

The loss dropped the Pirates to 0-3 on the season, as the Riptide improved to 4-1.

Despite the offensive woos for the Pirates, catcher, Landon Marshall managed a standout performance, reaching base in three of his four plate appearances and throwing out two would be base-stealers.

Despite taking the loss, Pirates starter Brieon Barron pitched well in his first start, surrendering just the one unearned run and two hits in three innings of work.

Reliever, Jake Geck turned in a strong performance as well, with two perfect innings.

The Pirates will try, once again, to look for that elusive first victory when they take on the Palm Springs Power on Tuesday, June 7th at Palm Springs Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Bucs are Game Enough

The Inland Valley Bucs (1-0) got off to a great start to their season defeating the Gamers 13-3 Wednesday night at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on consecutive two-out hits by Sheldon Borson, Kyle Jackson and Todd Yost.

The Bucs fell behind 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but responded immediately in the bottom of the frame with a seven-spot.

Just as both runs in the second came with two outs, so too did all seven runs in the inning. Aaron McCann walked and scored. Justin Gomez cranked a RBI double and scored. Dylan Lowenstein walked and scored. Gehrig Vargas had a RBI knock and Brad Lewis had a two-run double. Borson and Jackson each tacked on another run to give the Bucs a 9-3 lead.

Inland Valley scored once more in the sixth and eighth and two more runs in the ninth.

While the offense was in mid-season form, the pitching stymied the opposition as well. Vini Haro struck out four in two innings, Jacob Battaglia only allowed one hit in two innings, Cody Maples retired the side in on inning of work, Logan Lannon and  Nate Alam also pitched scoreless innings.

The Bucs take on the San Diego Invaders at 4:30 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday.

Pirates 2016 Season Preview

Fresh off a trip to Wichita, Kansas for the NBC World Series, the Pirates will take on a new challenge this season. They make the move to the brand new Sunset Baseball League.

Traditionally, the Pirates had been coached by program founder and GM Charlie Reynoso, but this year Reynoso takes a step back to focus on his GM duties and gives an opportunity to several exciting new coaches.

Jenzen Torres will be the manager. Torres has been at Cal Poly Pomona as an assistant for the past three years and brings energy and excitement into the program. He has the most home runs in Bronco history and also played professionally.

Speaking of professionals, Chad Cordero will serve as the pitching coach. He currently coaches at Cal State Fullerton and was an MLB all-star for the Nationals in 2005 recording 47 saves.

While the coaching staff is stellar, the roster is even more impressive.

Iowa sophomore Kyle Wade looks to have the makings of a legitimate ace.

Senior Sean Patton (Cal State East Bay) will be another ace for the staff. Last season, Patton recorded a microscopic 1.31 ERA for the Pirates, the second best in program history.

Senior Conlan McKenzie adds another veteran presence for what should be a lights out pitching staff. McKenzie is in his third go-around with the Pirates.

Joseph Morreale jumps ship from the Bucs to the Pirates. He’ll take on the catching duties. He had a great season at Citrus finishing with a .327 BA and was a key cog toward the end of the season last year for the Bucs.

Another big bat will be Jonathan de Marte’s, who makes the trip all the way from New York after hitting .319 this past season with the Richmond Spiders.

Other returning Inland Valley players include: Jarrett Anton, Nick Cordoba, Art Corona, JP Hopkins,  Aaron Torres and Hayden Wright.

The Pirates take the field for the first time at Mt. View High School in El Monte to take on the Gamers. Their first SBL game will June, 9 at home against the Arroyo Seco Saints.
