Bucs Win Again

The Inland Valley Buccaneers (3-5, 1-1) defeated the Orange Coast Bucs 9-7 on Thursday night at Orange Coast College.

The Bucs have now won three of their past four games.

It all began in the very first inning when Breyer Gayle, who finished 4-for-4, scored on a RBI single by JP Hopkins.

Hopkins was brought home by Brendan Campbell’s RBI rip to left field to make it a 2-0 lead for the Bucs.

Inland Valley added one run in the third and fourth innings to extend the margin to 4-0.

Kevin Riley knocked in Gayle in the third and Gayle scored again on a Hopkins knock in the fourth.

The OCC Bucs scored one in the bottom of the fourth.

The fifth inning saw seven total runs scored, four of which were plated by Inland Valley.

Campbell and Matt Majher scored on a two-run single by Bryce Brooks.

Anthony Seminaris lined a single to right field scoring Joseph Morreale.

Gayle brought home Seminaris with a base hit to give the Bucs an 8-1 lead.

The OCC Bucs scored three in the fifth to narrow their deficit to 8-4.

The Bucs tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Gayle belted his second RBI scoring Blake Vandegrift.

The OCC Bucs plated two in the seventh and one in the eighth to make it 9-7, but that was as close as they could get as Randall Ortiz notched his first save of the season.

Cameron Rodriguez tossed 1.1 innings, struckout two and was credited with the win.

OC Bucs Fall to Mavericks

The OC Buccaneers fell to the Victor Valley Mavericks in Wednesday night’s contest by a score of 4-3.

The Buccaneers’ offense could muster very little against the Mavericks pitching staff.

The loss drops the Bucs to 2-4 on the very young season.

The Bucs jumped out to early 1-0 lead on a Nick Reeser sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.

The Mavericks would get on the board with 2 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 2-1 lead.

However, the Bucs would regain the lead momentarily in the bottom half of the inning. A throwing error on a bunt attempt would send the tying run home and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Anthony Moreno would plate the go-ahead run, giving the Bucs a 3-2 lead.

The lead was short lived, however, as the very next inning, the Mavericks scratched 2 more runs across to take a 4-3 lead and would eventually win by the same score.

The Bucs were held to just four hits on the day. Two of those hits came off the bat of Austin McGilvra who went 2 for 4 in the contest.

Aaron Torres had a nice day as well, reaching base in all three of his plate appearances and scoring two of the Bucs three runs.

The Buccaneers will pick it back up this Thursday, June 11 at La Sierra as they take on the Inland Empire Fire. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Three Pirates Drafted

3_pirated[1]Three former Inland Valley Pirates have reached the pinnacles of their careers by hearing their names announced in the 2015 MLB Draft.

It started with Cody Ponce late Monday night, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 55th overall pick in the second round.

Ponce boasted a microscopic 1.69 ERA in 2013, while only allowing the opposition to hit .164. He was the ace of the staff at Cal Poly Pomona this past season and a big reason why they were able to advance to the semifinal round of the Division 2 World Series.

Christian Kelley celebrated next early Wednesday morning as he was drafted by a familiar mascot, the Pirates in the 11th round. Kelley was the 337th overall pick.

Kelley was one of the undoubted leaders of the Pirates in his two-year stint with the ball club. He was a two-time SCCBL all-star selection hitting .284 in 2014, while ripping in 11 and also scoring 11 runs. Kelley’s prowess as a brick-wall backstop was on full display both seasons as he commanded the best from his pitching staffs and got it time and time again. Mix that with the fact that he has a cannon for an arm and the big league Pirates should feel like they’ve gotten one of the steals of the draft.

Finally, Kyle Garlick was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers as the 852nd overall pick in round 28.

Garlick was huge in the push to the playoffs. He hit .344 and was a mainstay in the middle of the lineup for each of his 10 games played. In the playoffs, he showed what clutch and prime-time player he was by coming up with a go-ahead double in the playoff game against Team San Diego, while adding a three-run homer to give the Pirates the lead over the Power in Game 1 of the Championship Series.

We wish the best of luck to all three of the former Pirates who were selected and look forward to seeing many more in future drafts!

Bucs Stifle Pirates Offense

The Inland Valley Bucs (2-5, 1-1) defeated the Inland Valley Pirates (3-1-1, 1-1) on a rainy and humid Tuesday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Bucs came into the contest 1-7 lifetime against the Pirates, but they didn’t let them get that down. From the moment the Bucs took BP, they seemed to be on a mission and now they have accomplished it – a split in the two game series against the Pirates.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when JP Hopkins ripped in Breyer Gayle.

In the second inning, the Bucs added three more runs.

Hershel Gardner started it off right with a leadoff walk and scored on a Brendan Campbell triple down the right field line.

Campbell came home on an Anthony Seminaris RBI knock.

Gayle belted in Seminaris as the Bucs grabbed a 4-0 lead.

They tacked on one more run in the third when JP Hopkins scored.

The Pirates didn’t score until the seventh inning as Justin Gomez crossed home plate after a wild pitch.

Jonathan Hopkins tossed four innings of shutout baseball for the Bucs, while striking out four and only allowing one hit.

Logan Lannon worked two innings in relief and notched the victory.

Alex Bernstein sealed the deal pitching the final 2.2 innings.

The Pirates play again in a SCCBL league contest against the OC Riptide Friday at 5 p.m. at Vanguard University.

The Bucs take on the OCC Pirates at Orange Coast College on Thursday in a non-league contest at 5 p.m.

Both games can be seen live on Inlandvalleybaseball.com!

Pirates Out Duel Bucs

The Pirates (3-0-1, 1-0) held off the Bucs (1-5, 0-1) 2-1 on Monday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona in a pitcher’s duel.

Brett Early was sensational for the Pirates logging six innings, while striking out nine and allowing no earned runs. The senior-to-be at the University of La Verne has now amassed 75 career strikeouts for the Pirates in his career, an Inland Valley record.

Andrew Eppenbach worked the final three innings in relief retiring nine of the 10 hitters he faced and earning his first save of the season.

The Bucs’ pitching staff was great as well.

David Kretschmar hurled the first four innings and allowed no runs en route to retiring 11 of  the 13 batters he faced on the day.

All three runs were scored in the fifth inning as the Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning only to see it vanquish in the bottom half of the frame.

Tristan Chamberlain scored on a Kevin Riley RBI, but the Pirates answered when Jonny Reynoso knocked in Michael Deceglie and Jake Thumm.
