Pirates Fall to Saints

The Inland Valley Pirates (10-16-1, 8-8) fell 4-3 to the Arroyo Seco Saints Saturday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Pirates fell behind 2-0 in the first, but got both back immediately in the bottom of the frame. Alberto Vargas cranked an RBI triple to left field scoring Alec Petrone. Vargas came home on a wild pitch to knot it up at 2-2.

The Saints scored one in the fifth to break the tie, but Inland Valley answered in the seventh as Mario Micketti came through with the tying RBI.

Unfortunately, Arroyo Seco loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and Spencer Rouse knocked in the winning run.

Breion Barron pitched six solid innings and struck out six, while allowing three runs.

The Pirates take on the Signal Hill Oilers in a doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Bucs Swept by Power

The Inland Valley Bucs’ season (18-13, 5-11) has come to an end after getting swept by the Palm Springs Power in the final game of the season by a 7-3 score.

Inland Valley needed to win one game to secure a playoff spot, but couldn’t get the job done as the Power were hungry to take the #1 seed and did just that.

The Bucs fell behind 4-0 entering the third inning when they scored their first run on an RBI triple by Sheldon Borson.

The Power extended the margin to 7-1 before the Bucs scored twice in the final inning on a two-run single by Matt Majher.

It was a bitter end for the Bucs, who showed such promise in the season, but ultimately failed to reach their objective of qualifying for the SCCBL playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Bucs Drop Tight Game 1 to Power

The Inland Valley Bucs (18-12, 5-10) couldn’t get off the schnide in game one of the doubleheader against the Palm Springs Power at Cal Poly Pomona.

Although 6.2 innings of excellent work from Logan Lannon, who struck out five and allowed two earned runs, kept Inland Valley in the game it wasn’t enough as the Bucs couldn’t find the timely hit.

Inland Valley left 10 men on base including six in scoring position.

The Bucs fell behind 1-0 in the first, but tied it in the second on an Alex Gaskin RBI single.

Inland Valley took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Anthony Virgen blasted a double over the head of the left fielder.

Palm Springs answered in the fifth with two to regain the lead at 3-2.

The Power added three much needed insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure victory.

Pirates Can’t Find Enough Offense

On Saturday at Scolinos Field, the Inland Valley Pirates fell to the South Bay Sliders in a tightly contested, 4-2 bout.

The Sliders got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off of Pirates starter, Breion Barron.

The Pirates managed to push across the early equalizer in the bottom of the first on a two-out base hit by Brennan McKenzie.

However, the Sliders regained the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings to make it a 3-1 game.

In the bottom of the seventh, McKenzie delivered once again, with a sacrifice fly to left to trim the lead to 3-2.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, they were unable to muster anything more as the Sliders tacked on an insurance run in the ninth and held on to win by a final of 4-2.

Brennan McKenzie stood out, offensively, driving in both of the Pirates two runs. On the mound, Kyle Wade turned in three shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out two batters.

The Pirates will drop anchor for a brief recess, before they draw their swords again on Wednesday, when they take on the Gamers at Scolinos Field. Game time is set for 6:00 PM.
