Force Out-Slug Pirates in Game 1

The Pirates fell to the San Diego Force, 9-5 in the first game of a doubleheader at Scolinos Field on Saturday.

The Force hung a four-spot in the third inning to take a 4-0.

The Pirates cut into the lead slightly on an RBI single by Jason Padlo, to make it a 4-1 game.

The Force tacked on two more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1.

The Pirates rallied, however, in the bottom of the inning.

With two outs and runners on first and third, shortstop Tristan Hildebrandt came through with a clutch double to left center, scoring one and trimming the lead to 6-2.

The next batter Jason Padlo kept the rally going with a two-run single, which cut the lead to 6-4.

Two batters later, Padlo came in to score on a single by Kyle Jackson. The lead was down to one, 6-5.

The score remained 6-5 until the eighth inning when the Force scored three runs to expand their lead to 9-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates tried to mount one last comeback, putting runners on first and third with one out. However, a double play ball extinguished the rally and hand the Pirates their fifth loss of the season.

Jason Padlo led the way for the Pirates, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Kyle Jackson also had a quality day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Pirates Give Dodgers the Blues

A stellar pitching performance nets the Pirates a 4-1 victory against the East Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

The Pirates’ pitching staff allowed just one unearned run on the evening as the offense slammed nine hits en route to the victory.

The Pirates didn’t waste any time getting on the board as in the first inning, catcher Justin Gomez hammered a 2-0 pitch over the right field fence for a two-run home run, thus giving the Pirates an early 2-0 lead.

The very next inning, the Pirates would tack on two more runs on RBI singles by Chaneng Varela and Kyle Jackson.

The Dodgers would rally for a run in the fifth inning, but Pirates starter, Nicholas Sergi would work his way out of the jam and keep the score at 4-1.

From there, manager, Charlie Reynoso, turned to bullpen to shut the door.

Reliever, Dylan Stablein, pitched three shutout innings of relief before turning it over closer, Andrew Eppenbach in the ninth.

In the inning, the Dodgers attempted to mount a comeback, putting runners on second and third with just one out. However, Eppenbach would strikeout the next two batters and nail down the save on the Pirates 4-1 victory.

Justin Gomez provided the crucial offensive blow with his two-run shot in the first.

Shortstop Chaneng Varela also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, as well as reaching base in all five of his plate appearances.

Nicholas Sergi went a very strong five innings, giving up just the one run on four hits and earned himself the victory.

“I just wanted to put the ball in play,” said Sergi. “I know I have a good defense behind me.”

The win moves the Pirates to 8-4-1 on the season.

The Pirates next contest will be this Saturday the 20th at Scolinos Field against the San Diego Force.

Bucs Fall Flat to Riptide

The Inland Valley Bucs (5-8, 3-4) fell 9-1 to the OC Riptide (5-10-1, 3-2) Friday night at Vanguard University.

The Bucs actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a mammoth home run off the bat of DJ Peters, but it all went downhill from there.

Of the nine runs allowed by the Bucs, only three were earned runs as Inland Valley made a number of mistakes in the field.

The Riptide scored six in the bottom of the first, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The two teams take the field again bright and early Saturday at 10 a.m.

David Grubaugh knocked in two RBI.

Jarrett Anton and Nick Reeser scored two runs each.

Kohto Hasegawa was sensational, allowing no hits or walks in four innings, while striking out two.

Missed Opportunities Haunt Bucs

Missed opportunities haunted the OC Bucs as they fell 2-0 to the Senators in Wednesday afternoon’s contest to the Inland Empire Senators.

The Bucs were a combined 0-7 with runners in scoring position and hit into three double plays.

Meanwhile the pitching staff combined to give up just two runs on four hits while striking out eight.

The Senators struck first, scoring an earned run in the very first inning.

After a double play ball halted the Bucs rally in the bottom of the inning, the Senators tacked on another run in the second to push their lead to 2-0.

The Bucs had plenty of opportunities to get on the board. In the fifth inning, the Bucs had men on second and third with nobody out, but were unable to score.

Later in the bottom of the sixth the Bucs loaded the bases with just one out. However, an inning double play put the brakes on a potential rally.

The Bucs would have their final nine batters retired in order and that would be that.

Despite the offensive struggles the Bucs pitching staff turned in a strong outing in the losing effort.

Four relief pitchers combined to give up just one hit over the final seven innings and retire the last eleven Senators in order.

The loss drops the Bucs to 5-5 on the season while the Senators improve to 5-10.

The Buccaneers will be back at it again on Thursday as they host the Long Beach Legends at Cal Poly Pomona at 1 p.m.

Bucs Forced to Dark Side

The Inland Valley Buccaneers (5-7, 3-3) were swept in a two-game home and away series against the San Diego Force on Wednesday night at Cal Poly Pomona by a 9-2 score.

Although the Bucs allowed nine to the Force for the second straight day, the final score is misleading as Inland Valley took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning.

The Bucs scored one in the first on a Johnny Juarez RBI double scoring Kevin Riley.

Juarez was back at it in the third when he executed a squeeze bunt for his second RBI of the game, this time scoring Breyer Gayle.

In addition to the 2-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth, starting pitcher Chris Sanchez hadn’t allowed a hit in his first five innings.

It all went downhill from there. The Force scored seven in the sixth and added another two in the seventh.

The Bucs will play another SCCBL game on Friday at 5 p.m. at Vanguard University against the OC Riptide.
