Bucs Slide Past South Bay

The Inland Valley Bucs (7-2) defeated the South Bay Sliders 10-2 on Monday night at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Bucs got out to an early 2-0 start in the first inning. Justin Gomez and Anthony Virgen each knocked in a run.

The Bucs tallied another run in the third on Gomez’s second RBI of the game.

South Bay scored one in the fourth, but the Bucs responded with one of their own.

Inland Valley scored twice in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Gehrig Vargas had an RBI double, Brandon Benson, Todd Yost and Dylan Lowenstein each had RBI singles.

The Bucs have Tuesday off, but start a period of seven league games in eight days on Wednesday starting with the Arroyo Seco Sentinels.

Bucs Fall in Extra Innings

The Inland Valley Bucs (6-2) lost their second straight game, this time in the 10th inning after tying it up in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.

Kyle Jackson ripped the RBI single up the middle to score Jordan Hernandez and the Pirates tied it at 1-1.

Southern Nevada plated four in the 10th as the Bucs ran out of pitching.

Jacob Battaglia was stellar, only allowing one hit and one walk in six shutout innings.

The Bucs take on the South Bay Sliders on Monday at Cal Poly Pomona.

Pirates Drilled by Oilers

The Inland Valley Pirates (3-6, 2-1) fell 8-2 to the Signal Hill Oilers Sunday night at Cal Poly Pomona in a SBL matchup.

The Oilers jumped out to a 5-0 lead scoring twice in the first, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth.

Inland Valley answered with a two-run sixth. Alec Petrone had an RBI knock scoring Nolan Luzzi. Dylan Lowenstein brought in Charlie Verrone on a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-2 ballgame.

Unfortunately, the Oilers went back to work scoring three more in the seventh.

The Pirates play again on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against the Gamers at Cal Poly Pomona.

Bucs Fall for First Time

The Inland Valley Bucs (6-1) fell for the first time on Saturday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona to the San Diego Waves 8-4.

The Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two RBI knock by Bradley Lewis.

The Waves scored seven unanswered runs before the Bucs got one back in the sixth on an RBI double by Jordan Hernandez to make it a 7-3 score.

The Waves tacked on another run in the eighth, while Inland Valley’s attempt for a rally fell short scoring one run in the process on an Anthony Virgen sacrifice fly.

The Bucs play again on Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona against Southern Nevada.

Pirates Keep Winning

The Inland Valley Pirates extended their winning streak to three games on Saturday night defeating the San Diego Waves 10-9 in a slugfest.

The Pirates fell behind 1-0 in the first, but responded immediately with two in the bottom of the frame when Alec Petrone and Jacob Blackiston scored.

The Waves grabbed a 4-2 lead in the third, but the Pirates answered again with one in the fourth to cut it to 4-3 on a Hayden Wright sacrifice fly.

The Waves went back to work scoring in the top of the fifth once to make it 5-3, which set the stage for the best inning of the season so far for the Pirates’ bats.

12 hitters came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and Inland Valley scored seven runs to take a 10-5 lead. Conlan McKenzie, Koby Glass and Jake Bryant each had RBI knocks in the inning.

The Waves fought back to make it 10-9, but Hayden Wright earned the save with help from Jahshua Jones who made a diving catch in center field to record the final out.

Art Corona earns the win.

The Pirates take on the Signal Hill Oilers in Sunset League play on Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona.

Pirates Pound Saints

For the second straight day, the Inland Valley Pirates (2-5, 2-0) defeated the Arroyo Seco Saints, this time by a 7-4 final.

The two teams played a home and home series with Friday’s game taking place at Jackie Robinson Field in Pasadena.

The game started with a bang by the Pirates bats as Jonathan De Marte knocked in Alec Patrone and wound up scoring later in the inning to make it 2-0.

The Saints cut the deficit in half in the second inning on a Daniel Netz RBI double and tied it in the third inning at 2-2.

Inland Valley went right back to work in the fourth inning when Charlie Verrone knocked in Landon Marshall to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

Back and forth they went, as the Saints tied it up in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Trevor Thompson.

The Pirates once again regained the lead in the seventh on RBI groundouts by De Marte and Jahshua Jones to make it a 5-3 score, but the Saints got within one again scoring in the bottom of the frame.

Inland Valley answered with two insurance runs in the eighth. Nolan Luzzi and Patrone each came through with an RBI in the inning.

Zack Cooper pitched four strong innings earning the win. Art Corona tossed two scoreless innings and notched the save.

The Pirates are back at it again on Saturday against the San Diego Waves.

 

Bucs Thrash Nighthawks

The Inland Valley Bucs (6-0) made quick work of the Colton Nighthawks on Friday night at Cal Poly Pomona with a 12-0 shutout victory.

The Bucs plated two in the first with RBI knocks by Justin Gomez and Brad Lewis.

Inland Valley increased the lead to 6-0 in the third. Michael Mora ripped a two-run base hit. Anthony Virgen and Sheldon Borson added RBI singles.

The Bucs scored another three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth.

Mora finished with five RBI.

Cody Maples earned the win tossing five shutout innings. Erik Trask pitched his first two innings of the season and picked up right where he left off in 2015 with three strikeouts.

DJ Peters a Dodger

Former Inland Valley Buccaneer DJ Peters of Western Nevada College has been selected in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the hometown Los Angeles Dodgers.

Peters set multiple Bucs’ single season records in 2015 including his .438 BA, .529 OBP, .589 SLG and 32 hits.

Peters is the fourth former Inland Valley player to hear his name in the draft joining Kyle Garlick, Christian Kelley and Cody Ponce.

The Inland Valley Baseball Association wishes Peters the best in the future and is eager to see more names called.

Pirates Win First Ever SBL Game

The Inland Valley Pirates defeated the Arroyo Seco Saints in their Sunset League opener on Thursday at Scolinos Field by a final tally of 8-1.

The Pirates’ offensive explosion was complemented by a strong performance from starting pitcher Brieon Barron and scoreless relief from the bullpen.

The Pirates wasted no time getting on the board, taking an early 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Hayden Wright in the first inning.

The Saints picked up the equalizer in the top of the second to tie the score at one.

However, the Pirates immediately answered back in the their half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Jarrett Anton grounded out, scoring JP Hopkins from third to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

A two-out, RBI single by Zack Cooper pushed the lead to 3-1.

In the third inning, with the bases loaded once again, Justin Katz came home on a groundout by Hayden Wright giving the Pirates a 4-1 lead.

The Pirates kept their foot on the gas pedal in the fourth inning as JP Hopkins came home on a throwing error. Later in the inning, Alberto Vargas scored the second run of the inning on Zack Cooper’s second RBI single, giving the Swashbucklers a 6-1 lead after four innings.

The score remained 6-1 until the bottom of the seventh when the Pirates struck again.

A fielding error by the shortstop allowed Mario Micketti to score from second base to give the Pirates a 7-1 lead. Later in the inning, the Pirates tacked on one more run for good measure on Jonathan De Marte’s two-out RBI single.

The Pirates pitching and defense held serve from there as the jaunty crew sailed easily to an 8-1 victory.

Zack Cooper stood out offensively going 2-for-2 with two runs batted in. Pitchers, Conlan McKenzie, Art Corona, Quinn Cooper and Aaron Torres aided Barron in his effort with six innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.

The victory was the Pirates first of the season and improved their record to 1-5, but at 1-0 in SBL play, the lead the South division.

The swashbucklers will set sail for Pasadena where they will draw their swords against the Saints once more on Friday, June 10th at Brookside Park. Game time is 6:10 PM.

Bombs Away

The Inland Valley Bucs (5-0, 1-0) defeated the Southern California Bombers 10-7 Thursday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona in a game that saw nine ninth inning runs scored.

The Bucs fell behind early 1-0 in the first, but answered with five in a row (four in the second and one in the third.)

The second inning featured four consecutive hits by Dylan Lowenstein, Brad Lewis, Sheldon Borson and Anthony Virgen.

Borson knocked in Jordan Hernandez in the third.

The Bombers inched closer in the fourth scoring one run to make it a 5-2 ballgame.

The Bucs went back to work with another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Virgen.

Inland Valley added four more in the ninth. Borson tripled in the inning and finished with four RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Virgen also ripped in four RBI including one in the ninth. He scored twice and stole a bag as well.

Vini Haro (2-0) earned the win hurling five innings.

The Bombers fought back with five runs in the bottom of the ninth to make things a bit nerve wracking, but Nate Alam got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Inland Valley takes on the Colton Nighthawks next at 6 p.m. Friday night at Cal Poly Pomona.
