Pirates Grab 1-0 Series Lead

The Inland Valley Pirates took Game 1 of the SBL semifinals over the Solana Beach Cardinals 4-3 at Torrey Pines High School on Tuesday afternoon.

After falling behind 2-0 on a Cole Klemke two-run homer, Inland Valley responded with two of their own in the fourth on three consecutive base hits. Alberto Vargas and Brennan McKenzie scored in the inning. Jonathan de Marte knocked in an RBI, but he was just getting started.

The Pirates tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Vargas scoring Mario Micketti to break a 2-2 tie.

De Marte blasted a home run over the left field fence to extend the margin to 4-2 in the top of the sixth.

Solana Beach cut the deficit in half to just one in the bottom of the inning, but the Pirates held on.

All three pitchers for the Pirates did well as Charlie Verrone earned the victory tossing the first five innings, Jake Geck pitched the sixth and seventh and Nathan Gilman was electric in his two shutout innings en route to the save.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Inland Valley Pirates (13-21-1, 11-13) fell to the Solana Beach Cardinals in Game 2 of the doubleheader 6-5 after squandering a 5-4 lead in the final inning.

The Pirates answered with four in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Brennan McKenzie ripped in one RBI. Koby Glass had the two-run tying base hit. Zack Cooper had the go-ahead RBI groundout.

The Cardinals responded with the tying run in the fifth.

Inland Valley regained the lead in the sixth at 5-4 as Aaron Torres scored.

Pirates Swept by Surf

The Inland Valley Pirates (12-19-1, 10-11) fell in Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the OC Surf by a 2-1 decision.

In the bottom of the third inning, Pirates first baseman, Jake Bryant, broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

The Surf immediately answered back in the top half of the fourth inning, putting up two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

From there, the Pirate bats went silent, as the offense mustered just one hit from that fourth inning on, and fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Pirates starter, Zack Cooper pitched well, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out four in four innings.

Relievers, Josh Walker, Schuyler Bates and Jonathan de Marte each turned in an inning of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.

The Pirates will have to regroup quickly and ready themselves for battle in an important conference matchup against the Arroyo Seco Saints on Thursday. With a win the Pirates would clinch a playoff spot.

Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Scolinos Field.
