Pirates Blast the Bucs

The Inland Valley Pirates (16-12-1, 6-9) got a measure of revenge in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday night at Cal Poly Pomona defeating the Inland Valley Bucs (11-14-2, 7-10) 11-2.

The Pirates scored three in the second inning and one in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

Nick Marshall contributed two RBI, while Drew Seelman and Greg Espinosa had one each.

The Bucs answered with one in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Matt Majher.

The Pirates went back to work with two more in the fourth making it a 6-1 game.

Nick Hernandez and Nick Costello had the RBI knocks in that inning.

The Bucs fought back with a run in the fifth to cut the margin to 6-2 when DJ Peters scored, but that was as close as they would get.

The Pirates plated five more runs late in the game to cruise to the 11-2 victory.

The Pirates next play in a doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona on Monday at 1 p.m. against the Palm Springs Power, while the Buccaneers take on the So Cal Nationals at 11 a.m. Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona.

Pirates Can’t Chop Down Foresters

The Inland Valley Pirates (11-10-1) fell to the Santa Barbara Foresters (21-3) 11-5 on Thursday night at UCSB.

The score doesn’t indicate how close the contest was in terms of just sheer hits.

The Pirates finished the game with 12 hits, just one fewer than the Foresters.

The Foresters got out to a 7-0 lead at the end of the fourth inning, but the Pirates answered with three in the sixth to cut it to 7-3.

The three runs scored on a double by Nick Marshall.

Santa Barbara responded with two in the bottom of the inning to extend the margin back to 9-3.

Inland Valley went right back to work in the eighth plating two runs to cut the score to 9-5.

Jake Thumm and Nolan Henley scored in the inning, while Chaneng Varela provided the RBI single.

The Foresters came back with two insurance runs in the frame and held on for an 11-5 victory.

The Pirates play again tomorrow at UCSB against Conejo Oaks at 12 p.m.

Pirates Comeback and Defeat San Diego

The Inland Valley Pirates (10-9-1, 4-8) battled back from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 5-4 victory against Team San Diego (7-17, 3-13) in game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona.

Much like yesterday’s contest, the Pirates fell behind early as Team San Diego plated two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.

Team San Diego scored another run in the second to push their lead to 3-0.

The Pirates offense was held silent until the fourth inning when Nick Costello recorded the Pirates first hit of the game on a single to right. He later came around to score the Pirates first run on a wild pitch.

The Pirates scratched across another run in the inning on an RBI groundout by Jonny Reynoso, which cut the lead to 3-2.

The score remained 3-2 until the sixth when Team San Diego pushed across another run to extend their lead to 4-2.

However, the Pirates would answer in the bottom half of the sixth.

An RBI double off the bat of Jeff Nellis made it a 4-3 ballgame. Nellis came around to score the tying run on an error by the second baseman.

The game remained deadlocked at four until the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on second and two men out, Nick Marshall hit a sharp ground ball that scooted right between the third baseman’s legs and allowed the runner, Nick Hernandez to score the go-ahead run.

The Pirates carried that 5-4 lead into the ninth when Team San Diego put runners on first and second with two outs.

On a 1-0 pitch, San Diego pinch hitter, Clayton Peterson drilled a sharp single into right. However, right fielder, Jacob Bernardy fielded the ball and made a strong throw to the plate to nail the potential tying run, thus securing the win for the Pirates.

Nicholas Sergi allowed just one run in seven strong innings in relief to pick up the victory, his third of the season.

Jeff Nellis had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, a run batted in and a stolen base.

Six-Run Second Powers Pirates Past San Diego

The Inland Valley Pirates (6-4-1, 2-3) used a six-run second inning to put Team San Diego (7-12, 2-6) away 9-2 Tuesday afternoon at Grossmont College.

In the second inning the Pirates batted around the lineup.

Drew Seelman had a big tw0-run double. Jacob Bernardy added a two-run knock and Troy Resch belted in an RBI.

Nick Hernandez, Jonny Reynoso, Nolan Henley, Nick Marshall, Jeff Nellis and Seelman all scored in the frame.

The Pirates tacked on another run in the third to make it 7-0. Henley had the RBI rip scoring Hernandez.

Inland Valley notched two more runs in the fifth to increase the margin to 9-0.

Brendan Hornung tossed a sensational seven innings. He struck out seven and only allowed one earned run.

Pirates Snap Losing Streak

In the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday night at Citrus College, the Pirates (4-4-1) finally got off the schnide.

Inland Valley thwarted a four-game losing streak by getting a measure of revenge on the OCC Bucs 6-3.

The Pirates grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Nick Hernandez knocked in Kyle Jackson.

The Bucs responded with one in the second to knot it up at 1-1.

The Pirates regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Nolan Henley scored Justin Gomez on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

Inland Valley used a four-run third to gain separation extending the margin to 6-1.

Nick Marshall had the big two-run double as Jeff Nellis and Jackson came home.

Jackson added an RBI and Hernandez notched his second of the game.

The Bucs got one in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but the Pirates held on.

Sean Patton earned the victory, hurling four innings and striking out one, while allowing just one earned run.

Five-run Inning Scuttles Pirates

A five-run fourth inning scuttled the Pirates (3-4-1) as they fell 8-3 to the Orange Coast Bucs in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Dylan Stablein went seven innings and struck out three, while Jason Padlo went 1-for-3 and drove in two of the Pirates’ three runs.

The Pirates offense spun their wheels early as they had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings.

In the fourth, the Bucs erupted for five runs to take a 5-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the Pirates offense continued to sputter until an RBI single by Jason Padlo in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to 5-1.

The Bucs would answer with a run in the top of the eighth to take a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning Jeff Nellis tripled and came around to score on a Jason Padlo groundout to make it 6-2.

However, once again, the Bucs answered right back, scoring two runs in the ninth to push the lead to 8-2.

The Pirates rallied for one in the bottom of the night on a base hit by Nick Marshall, but it would prove to be too little, too late as they fell by a final count of 8-3.

Pirates Taken Away by the Riptide

The Inland Valley Pirates (3-3-1, 1-3) lost to the OC Riptide (4-6-1, 2-0) in heart-breaking fashion for the second consecutive night.

This time the Riptide came through with five runs in the ninth to take a 7-5 victory over the host Pirates at Citrus College on Saturday night.

The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jason Padlo scored on an error.

The Riptide answered with two in the sixth.

Inland Valley fought back in the eighth plating three runs to make it a 4-2 contest heading into the final frame.

Ryan Marcos singled and scored. Nick Marshall ripped a RBI single and scored. Jeff Nellis and Padlo each added one RBI.

However, on this day, it wasn’t meant to be for the Pirates as Brett Early, who pitched a stellar first eight innings allowing only two runs while striking out nine, allowed the first three in the inning to reach base.

From there, the usually steady pitching staff fell apart and hit two batters, while walking another two with the bases loaded.

The Pirates look to regroup in a non-league doubleheader against the OCC Bucs on Sunday afternoon at Citrus College.

Pirates Cool Off Fire

The Inland Valley Pirates (1-0) defeated the Lake Havasu Fire 11-9 Tuesday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

The high-scoring affair was somewhat of an unusual occurrence for the Pirates whose pitching typically stymies the opposition.

The Pirates used an eight-run fourth inning where they sent 14 hitters to the plate as a kick starter to their 2015 campaign.

After falling behind 2-0, Anthony Virgen started the fourth with a single and ended up scoring on a Nolan Henley RBI double. Henley went 2-for-2 in the inning and tacked on two more RBI later scoring Virgen for a second time as well as Kyle Jackson.

Chaneng Varela, Nick Marshall, Justin Gomez and Troy Resch added one RBI apiece in the fourth.
