The Inland Valley Pirates couldn’t get it done in their first game of the series with the Solana Beach Redbirds resulting in a 9-5 loss Thursday night.
Pirates sailed into rocky waters in the first inning when the Redbirds scored 2 lead off runs to start the game. Thankfully the Pirates were able to respond with a homerun in the bottom of the first from catcher, Cameron Trudel (20). The Redbirds’ and Pirates’ score went back and forth until the score was tied at 4-4 in the fifth. However, the Redbirds ended the tied and gained a lead by capitalizing on pitching and defensive errors from the Pirates’ staff.
Despite a loss, the Pirates’ defense was still on point. Spotlight player for last night’s game is catcher, Cameron Trudel. Trudel scored the Pirates’ first run of the night with a solo homerun in the first inning, a double in the fifth and a single in the eighth. Trudel showed he belonged behind the plate with great defensive footwork, not allowing very many balls to get pass him and being quick to get throw outs at every base.
After Thursday’s league game against the Redbirds, the Pirates are now 5-14 in Sunset Baseball League play. The Inland Valley Pirates will take a few days off and will finish the series with the Solana Beach Redbirds on Saturday, July 14 in a double header in Coronado at Coronado High School at 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm.
