Bucs are Game Enough

The Inland Valley Bucs (1-0) got off to a great start to their season defeating the Gamers 13-3 Wednesday night at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on consecutive two-out hits by Sheldon Borson, Kyle Jackson and Todd Yost.

The Bucs fell behind 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but responded immediately in the bottom of the frame with a seven-spot.

Just as both runs in the second came with two outs, so too did all seven runs in the inning. Aaron McCann walked and scored. Justin Gomez cranked a RBI double and scored. Dylan Lowenstein walked and scored. Gehrig Vargas had a RBI knock and Brad Lewis had a two-run double. Borson and Jackson each tacked on another run to give the Bucs a 9-3 lead.

Inland Valley scored once more in the sixth and eighth and two more runs in the ninth.

While the offense was in mid-season form, the pitching stymied the opposition as well. Vini Haro struck out four in two innings, Jacob Battaglia only allowed one hit in two innings, Cody Maples retired the side in on inning of work, Logan Lannon and  Nate Alam also pitched scoreless innings.

The Bucs take on the San Diego Invaders at 4:30 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday.

Pirates Fall Short

The Inland Valley Pirates (18-17-2) fell short in their quest to win in dramatic fashion in Game 3 of the SCCBL first round against the Palm Springs Power (34-12).

The Power scored the lone run of the game in the third inning without notching a hit or even an error as Ryan Raslowsky reached on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly.

With that said, the Pirates had their chances, but base running mistakes were the thing that hurt their chances the most.

In the ninth inning, Inland Valley got two consecutive hits to start the inning from Kyle Jackson and Andrew Alvarez and they had runners on the corners with no outs. The tying run was just 90 feet away and the go-ahead run was on board, but the Pirates couldn’t come through with the timely hit as Justin Gomez bounced one to the first baseman who threw Jackson out at the plate. Nick Costello and Greg Espinosa tried to continue the rally, but on this day it was meant to be.

The pitching staff was great, only allowing four hits and the one run. Sean Patton worked the middle three innings and notched five strike outs.

Pirates Fall in 11

Sunday afternoon at Madison High, the Pirates (8-8-1, 3-7) and Force (22-4, 9-2) finished a previously suspended game from earlier in the season.

The teams started in the 10th inning knotted up at 8.

It ended quickly as the Force scored twice in the 11th to win the game.

It was a game the Pirates should have been able to close out previously as they had the lead 8-6 in the eighth, but the Force scored twice to tie it up on two errors, two walks and a hit batter meaning that a single hit wasn’t recorded in the eighth inning, yet the Force still tied it up.

The Force took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but the Pirates answered in the bottom of the inning with one of their own on a RBI single by Justin Gomez.

Gomez came through again with another RBI in the third scoring Kyle Jackson both times to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

The Force fought back scoring five unanswered runs to grab a 6-2 lead in the sixth, but the pirates responded with a six-run sixth inning.

Tyler Urbach and Jackson each knocked in one and Jason Padlo had a two-run single making it an 8-6 Pirate lead, only to be relinquished in the eighth.

Pirates Swept Away by Riptide

The Inland Valley Pirates (8-7-1, 3-6) were swept by the OC Riptide (9-12-1, 7-3) on Wednesday night at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Riptide scored the first four runs of the game en route to taking a 4-3 victory.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates tried fighting back as Kyle Jackson blasted a two-run homer down the left field line.

The Pirates plated another run in the eighth when Jackson scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Nellis, but could not come back all the way to knot it up.

The Pirates have now suffered their third three-game losing streak of the season and look to buck the trend on Sunday when the face off in a league matchup against the San Diego Force.

Force Out-Slug Pirates in Game 1

The Pirates fell to the San Diego Force, 9-5 in the first game of a doubleheader at Scolinos Field on Saturday.

The Force hung a four-spot in the third inning to take a 4-0.

The Pirates cut into the lead slightly on an RBI single by Jason Padlo, to make it a 4-1 game.

The Force tacked on two more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1.

The Pirates rallied, however, in the bottom of the inning.

With two outs and runners on first and third, shortstop Tristan Hildebrandt came through with a clutch double to left center, scoring one and trimming the lead to 6-2.

The next batter Jason Padlo kept the rally going with a two-run single, which cut the lead to 6-4.

Two batters later, Padlo came in to score on a single by Kyle Jackson. The lead was down to one, 6-5.

The score remained 6-5 until the eighth inning when the Force scored three runs to expand their lead to 9-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates tried to mount one last comeback, putting runners on first and third with one out. However, a double play ball extinguished the rally and hand the Pirates their fifth loss of the season.

Jason Padlo led the way for the Pirates, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Kyle Jackson also had a quality day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

In the fourth, Kyle Jackson tripled to deep left center field and was brought home on an RBI ground out by Nick Hernandez to make it a 2-1 lead. Jackson finished with four runs, while Hernandez bashed in four RBI.

Pirates Cool Off Fire

The Inland Valley Pirates (1-0) defeated the Lake Havasu Fire 11-9 Tuesday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

The high-scoring affair was somewhat of an unusual occurrence for the Pirates whose pitching typically stymies the opposition.

The Pirates used an eight-run fourth inning where they sent 14 hitters to the plate as a kick starter to their 2015 campaign.

After falling behind 2-0, Anthony Virgen started the fourth with a single and ended up scoring on a Nolan Henley RBI double. Henley went 2-for-2 in the inning and tacked on two more RBI later scoring Virgen for a second time as well as Kyle Jackson.

Chaneng Varela, Nick Marshall, Justin Gomez and Troy Resch added one RBI apiece in the fourth.
