Pirates Swept Again

The Inland Valley Pirates dropped Game 2 of Sunday’s doubleheader at Joe Hicks Memorial Field to the Signal Hill Oilers by a score of 4-1.

The Pirates offense was held in check by Oilers starter, Alex Baez who limited the Pirates offense to just one run.

Much like in Game 1 of the doubleheader, the Oilers took the lead early with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Oilers doubled up on their lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the second.

The Pirates offense finally got off the mat in the fourth inning, as a two-out, RBI single by Alberto Vargas trimmed the lead to 2-1.

That’s as close as they would get, however, as the bats would be held silent for the rest of the contest.

The Oilers, tacked on single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to secure a 4-1 victory and a sweep of the doubleheader.

Despite the offensive struggles for the Pirates, both Alec Petrone and JP Hopkins turned in two-hit performances.

The loss was the Pirates second of the day and fourth in a row, dropping their record to 6-6 in conference play. The Pirates will try and right the ship on Tuesday when they travel to Orange Coast College to draw swords with the OCC Bucs. Game time is set for 2:00 PM.

Pirates Drop Heartbreaker

The Inland Valley Pirates fell in one of the toughest ways imaginable in 11 innings in game one of a doubleheader against the Signal Hill Oilers at Long Beach City College by a score of 7-6.

After trailing 3-0 for the first six innings, the Pirates manufactured three runs in the top of the seventh to knot it up at 3-3. Zack Cooper, Mario Micketti and Hayden Wright each produced an RBI in the inning.

The score held until the top of the 10th when Breion Barron cranked a three-run home run clearing the left field fence to give the Pirates a 6-3 lead.

The Oilers answered in the bottom of the 10th scoring three runs including the tying run on a wild pitch.

Signal Hill walked off in the 11th as the Pirates ran out of pitching.

The Bucs lost 8-3.

They fell behind 3-0 at the end of four innings.

Inland Valley scored their first run in the fifth to make it 3-1 on an RBI base hit by Kyle Jackson, but a nightmare five-run bottom of the fifth put the game out of reach.

The Bucs scored once more in the eighth and ninth innings. Jackson ripped his second RBI of the game.

Bucs Comeback on Sentinels

The Inland Valley Bucs (11-7, 4-5) defeated the Arroyo Seco Sentinels in the 10th inning on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Field in game one of the doubleheader.

The Bucs trailed the whole game until the ninth inning.

The Sentinels scored twice in the first and once in the second to grab an early 3-0 lead.

Inland Valley answered with one in the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Justin Gomez that was cranked to the warning track in right field as an amazing catch was made by right fielder Noeh Martinez robbing Gomez of an extra base hit.

Arroyo Seco responded with another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1.

The Bucs scored once in the seventh and eighth innings to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Michael Mora produced an RBI ground out and Gomez ripped an RBI single.

The Sentinels scored in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead to 5-3.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, the Bucs loaded the bases after a bunt base hit by Jake Scott. Up came Kyle Jackson, who ripped the game-tying two-run single.

In the top of the 10th, the Bucs took the lead for the first time on a sacrifice fly by Matt Majher scoring Brad Lewis.

The Bucs held on as Logan Lannon earned the tough victory tossing the final two innings and striking out four.

Pirates Walkoff for 2nd Straight Game

On Friday, at Scolinos Field, The Inland Valley Pirates out-dueled the Solana Beach Cardinals for a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

Clutch, late inning heroics helped to back a stellar pitching performance from starter, Kyle Wade.

The Pirates jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Alec Petrone came home on an RBI single by Jonathan de Marte. With runners on first and third, Alberto Vargas scampered home on the stolen base attempt by de Marte, pushing the Pirate lead to 2-0.

The Cardinals scored a run in the top half of the second inning to cut the lead in half.

From that point on, both pitchers managed to hold the opposition silent.

The epic pitcher’s duel reached its climax in the ninth inning, when a two-out RBI single in the top half of the inning tied the score at two.

In the bottom half of the ninth, after Alec Petrone led off with a double, catcher, Landon Marshall singled up the middle to drive him home and give the Pirates their second consecutive walk-off victory by a final tally of 3-2.

Despite being credited with a no decision in the contest, Pirates starter, Kyle Wade turned in a spectacular seven inning performance, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out four and walking just one.

The victory pushed the Pirates to 6-2 in conference play and gave them 0.5 game lead in the South standings.

The Pirates will meet the Cardinals in doubleheader action Saturday at Torrey Pines High School. First game begins at 12:00 PM.
