The Pirates (25-6, 12-4) swept the season series against Team San Diego with a 4-3 victory in Game 2 of the doubleheader Friday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.
San Diego jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but Inland Valley responded immediately with a run in the bottom half of the inning when Matthew Reynoso’s RBI single scored Michael Johnson to knot it up at 1-1.
San Diego grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but once again the Pirates fought back.
Inland Valley scored one in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to one when AJ David knocked in Dylan Lowenstein.
The Pirates finally took the lead for the first time in the sixth inning, a lead they would not relinquish.
Nathan Virgen led the inning off with a double. Andrew Alvarez was hit by a pitch. Both scored on a two-run double by Anthony Virgen.
Conlan McKenzie (2-0) earned the win tossing two innings in relief, while facing the minimum of six hitters.
Andrew Alvarez slammed the door shut pitching the final two innings. He earned the save.
