9-Run 1st Inning Helps Pirates Sweep Heat

pirates gm 22The Pirates (19-5, 10-4) swept the doubleheader with a 10-4 win in Game 2 against the High Desert Heat (6-8, 3-7) Wednesday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

Only two days away from the Fourth of July, offensive fireworks were the norm for the Pirates in the first inning recording 11 consecutive hits en route to a nine-run first inning.

Chaneng Varela went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Garlick went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Bryce Cherry ripped an RBI up the middle and scored. Greg Espinosa cracked and RBI single and scored. Anthony Virgen belted an RBI double. Jacob Bernardy singled and scored. Alec Morabito added an RBI single and scored. Dylan Lowenstein got an infield base hit and scored. Matthew Reynoso singled and scored. All of these stats are just from the first inning!

The Heat came back with four runs in the sixth to close the margin to 9-4.

Inland Valley tacked on one more insurance run in the seventh when Matthew Reynoso knocked in Morabito.

Ryan Romero (2-0) notched the win throwing 3.1 innings.
