Pirates Win Game 1 in SD

pirates gm 19The Pirates (16-4, 7-3) defeated Team San Diego (16-8, 6-4) 8-4 in Game 1 of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Morley Field in San Diego.

Inland Valley came out of the gate strong with two runs in the first inning when Jonny Reynoso belted a two-run double scoring Greg Espinosa and Andrew Alvarez.

San Diego came back with two of their own in the bottom of the first to knot it up at 2 apiece.

The Pirates regained the lead with one run in the second. Christian Kelley knocked in Nathan Virgen as Inland Valley took a 3-2 lead.

San Diego responded immediately again plating one in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 3.

The Pirates broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning.

Nathan Virgen, Matt Reynoso and Fernando Escobar all got one RBI. Anthony Virgen, Jacob Bernardy, Matt Reynoso and Chaneng Varela all scored once in the inning to make it a 7-3 lead.

The Pirates tacked on one more in the eighth when Bernardy hit in Alec Morabito.

Jordan Scheftz (1-0) tossed four innings in relief and earned his first victory of the season.
