Pirates and Force Tie

The Inland Valley Pirates and the San Diego Force have officially tied 5-5 in a game played at Madison High School earlier in the season.

The final score was 5-5.

It was a back-and-forth game that saw lead changes and ultimately was called due to darkness.

Erik Trask was exceptional tossing 7.2 innings, while striking out five. He allowed three earned runs, but unfortunately for the Pirates, two unearned runs are what the Force used to tie and take a late 5-4 lead.

The Pirates responded by tying it right back up.

Jeff Nellis had a big day at the dish going 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Michael Deceglie scored twice.

Pirates Sweep San Diego

The Inland Valley Pirates (7-4-1, 3-3) completed the road sweep of Team San Diego (7-13, 2-7) on Tuesday night at Grossmont College.

Inland Valley won the second game of the doubleheader 4-2.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first when Justin Gomez doubled home Drew Seelman, who scored three of the Pirates’ four runs.

Team San Diego answered with two in the second to grab a 2-1 lead.

The Pirates got even in the fifth when Seelman scored his second run on an error.

Michael Deceglie scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on an error by the second baseman as Inland Valley regained the lead.

Kyle Jackson added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Seelman.

Andrew Eppenbach earned the winning, hurling 3.1 innings in relief while allowing no runs.

The Pirates take the field again on Friday night against the East LA Dodgers at Banning High at 6:30 p.m.

Pirates Overpower Dodgers

The Inland Valley Pirates (5-4-1) bats slugged their way to an 18-1 blowout victory over the East LA Dodgers including an 11-run fifth inning Monday night at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Dodgers actually went out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but it was all Inland Valley from there.

In the third, Troy Resch knocked in Jacob Bernardy. Bernardy finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

In the fourth, Kyle Jackson tripled to deep left center field and was brought home on an RBI ground out by Nick Hernandez to make it a 2-1 lead. Jackson finished with four runs, while Hernandez bashed in four RBI.

Entering the fifth inning, it appeared like it was going to be a tightly contested game, but that’s when the Pirates sent up 16 hitters to the plate and scored 11 runs. The Pirates had nine hits in the inning and three walks.

Chaneng Varela crushed a three-run triple to the gap in left field clearing the bases including himself as an error was made on the relay throw and he came home to score.

Tyler Urbach and Hernandez contributed two-run doubles in the inning.

Jonny Reynoso, Jacob Bernardy and Jake Thumm each belted one RBI in the frame.

Nolan Henley went 2-for-2 in the inning and scored twice.

Inland Valley tacked on two more in the sixth when Justin Gomez scored Jackson and Hernandez.

The Pirates added three more in the eighth as Jackson, Hernandez and Michael Deceglie scored.

Andrew Matus earned the victory tossing 6.1 innings and struck out seven, while only allowing one run.

Pirates Out Duel Bucs

The Pirates (3-0-1, 1-0) held off the Bucs (1-5, 0-1) 2-1 on Monday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona in a pitcher’s duel.

Brett Early was sensational for the Pirates logging six innings, while striking out nine and allowing no earned runs. The senior-to-be at the University of La Verne has now amassed 75 career strikeouts for the Pirates in his career, an Inland Valley record.

Andrew Eppenbach worked the final three innings in relief retiring nine of the 10 hitters he faced and earning his first save of the season.

The Bucs’ pitching staff was great as well.

David Kretschmar hurled the first four innings and allowed no runs en route to retiring 11 of  the 13 batters he faced on the day.

All three runs were scored in the fifth inning as the Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning only to see it vanquish in the bottom half of the frame.

Tristan Chamberlain scored on a Kevin Riley RBI, but the Pirates answered when Jonny Reynoso knocked in Michael Deceglie and Jake Thumm.

Pirates 2015 Season Preview

The Pirates return 14 players from their SCCBL 2015 regular season co-championship team.

Andrew Alavarez pre game
Andrew Alvarez

Former SCCBL all-stars Andrew Alvarez, Kyle Jackson, Jonny Reynoso, Anthony Virgen and Nathan Virgen are all back to help the club improve to the next level after last season’s successful 26-8 finish.

Alvarez posted gaudy numbers, while dominating the competition in 2014. The Houston Baptist senior-to-be earned Pitcher of the Month honors in June, while finishing 5-0 with a 2.42 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. He did damage with the bat as well, finishing with a .341 batting average and leading the team with 31 hits for the season. Continue reading “Pirates 2015 Season Preview”
