Pirates Walkoff Against San Diego

The Inland Valley Pirates (11-9-1, 5-8) got a much needed sweep of a doubleheader against Team San Diego (7-18, 3-14) by virtue of a walkoff sacrifice fly by Jonny Reynoso.

The Pirates won 6-5 and swept the season series from Team San Diego.

San Diego jumped out to an early 3-0 lead for the second time in the double dip.

The Pirates got one back  in the bottom of the second on a Nick Costello RBI single that scored Nick Hernandez.

San Diego tacked on another run in the third to increase their lead to 4-1.

Inland Valley answered with two in the fifth to pull within one on three consecutive hits.

Jeff Nellis cracked a triple and was brought in on a double down the right field line by Chaneng Varela.

Varela scored on a Jason Padlo RBI single to make it a 4-3 ballgame.

The Pirates took the lead in the sixth as Costello and Jacob Bernardy scored as Inland Valley took its first lead at 5-4.

Team San Diego tied it at 5 apiece in the seventh, but the Pirates walked off against them when Justin Gomez scored on Jonny Reynoso’s RBI sacrifice fly.

The Pirates travel up north to Santa Barbara to take on the two-time defending NBC World Series champion Santa Barbara Foresters at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon at UCSB.

Pirates Comeback and Defeat San Diego

The Inland Valley Pirates (10-9-1, 4-8) battled back from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 5-4 victory against Team San Diego (7-17, 3-13) in game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona.

Much like yesterday’s contest, the Pirates fell behind early as Team San Diego plated two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.

Team San Diego scored another run in the second to push their lead to 3-0.

The Pirates offense was held silent until the fourth inning when Nick Costello recorded the Pirates first hit of the game on a single to right. He later came around to score the Pirates first run on a wild pitch.

The Pirates scratched across another run in the inning on an RBI groundout by Jonny Reynoso, which cut the lead to 3-2.

The score remained 3-2 until the sixth when Team San Diego pushed across another run to extend their lead to 4-2.

However, the Pirates would answer in the bottom half of the sixth.

An RBI double off the bat of Jeff Nellis made it a 4-3 ballgame. Nellis came around to score the tying run on an error by the second baseman.

The game remained deadlocked at four until the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on second and two men out, Nick Marshall hit a sharp ground ball that scooted right between the third baseman’s legs and allowed the runner, Nick Hernandez to score the go-ahead run.

The Pirates carried that 5-4 lead into the ninth when Team San Diego put runners on first and second with two outs.

On a 1-0 pitch, San Diego pinch hitter, Clayton Peterson drilled a sharp single into right. However, right fielder, Jacob Bernardy fielded the ball and made a strong throw to the plate to nail the potential tying run, thus securing the win for the Pirates.

Nicholas Sergi allowed just one run in seven strong innings in relief to pick up the victory, his third of the season.

Jeff Nellis had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, a run batted in and a stolen base.

Pirates Notch Legendary Win

The Inland Valley Pirates (9-9-1) defeated the Long Beach Legends at Scolinos Field on Tuesday by a score of 5-2.

Six Pirates pitchers combined to give up just two runs on four hits as the offense capitalized on four Legend errors.

Long Beach jumped on the board early with a run in the first inning on an RBI single.

The Pirates answered back in the second inning, when Nick Hernandez scored on a fielding error, tying the game at 1.

In the bottom of the third, with two on and two out, Johnny Reynoso singled to drive in a run and give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

The Legends managed to tie the game at 2 with a run in the top half of the seventh. However, it would be short-lived as in the bottom of the seventh, late game insert, Chaneng Varela, singled to drive in the go-ahead run and give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

Two batters later, the Pirates plated an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by outfielder, Sergio Robles.

Two batters later the Pirates scored their third run of the inning, when a double steal attempt forced an errant throw from the catcher, allowing the runner at third to score.

The Pirates held the Legends scoreless from there and walked away with the 5-2 victory.

The Pirates used six different pitchers to hold the Legends to just two runs and four hits.

Nicholas Sergi is credited with the win in relief, giving up just one unearned run and striking out one batter in his lone inning.

Justin Gomez continued his hot hitting, as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored and reached base in all three of his plate appearances.

The Pirates will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday as they play a doubleheader against Team San Diego at Scolinos Field. The first takes place at 1 p.m.

Pirates Fall Short of Comeback

The Inland Valley Pirates (8-9-1, 3-8) fell short of their comeback attempt against the San Diego Force (23-4, 10-2) Sunday afternoon at Madison High.

After trailing by six runs on three separate occasions, the Pirates cut the deficit to three in the eighth and left bases loaded in the ninth.

The Force led 6-0 at the end of the second.

The Pirates got one back in the third when Drew Seelman knocked home Jeff Nellis.

The margin was once again extended to six as the Force tacked on one in the third to make it a 7-1 score.

The Pirates plated one in the fifth on a Jason Padlo RBI single, but once again the Force made it a six-run game when they answered in the sixth to grab an 8-2 lead.

In the eighth, the Pirates scored three to cut the deficit in half at 8-5. The first three hitters in the inning all reached base and scored including Jonny Reynoso, Justin Gomez and Jacob Bernardy.

The Pirates threatened in the ninth with bases loaded one out, but Justin Hertzman, the Force closer slammed the door shut by striking out both Pirates he faced.

In the fourth, Kyle Jackson tripled to deep left center field and was brought home on an RBI ground out by Nick Hernandez to make it a 2-1 lead. Jackson finished with four runs, while Hernandez bashed in four RBI.

Entering the fifth inning, it appeared like it was going to be a tightly contested game, but that’s when the Pirates sent up 16 hitters to the plate and scored 11 runs. The Pirates had nine hits in the inning and three walks.

Chaneng Varela crushed a three-run triple to the gap in left field clearing the bases including himself as an error was made on the relay throw and he came home to score.

Andrew Alavarez pre game
Andrew Alvarez

Former SCCBL all-stars Andrew Alvarez, Kyle Jackson, Jonny Reynoso, Anthony Virgen and Nathan Virgen are all back to help the club improve to the next level after last season’s successful 26-8 finish.

Alvarez posted gaudy numbers, while dominating the competition in 2014. The Houston Baptist senior-to-be earned Pitcher of the Month honors in June, while finishing 5-0 with a 2.42 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. He did damage with the bat as well, finishing with a .341 batting average and leading the team with 31 hits for the season. Continue reading “Pirates 2015 Season Preview”
