Bucs Split with Riptide

The Inland Valley Bucs (13-15-2, 8-11) split the season series with the OC Riptide (15-19-1, 12-8) on Wednesday night at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Bucs won 10-3 in the final game of the set and will renew the rivalry next Monday in the first round of the SCCBL playoffs.

For the first seven innings, it was a back-and-forth affair until the Bucs used a six-run eighth inning to put the game out of reach.

Randall Ortiz was sensational tossing 6.2 innings and striking out six, while not allowing an earned run.

The Riptide got out to a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Bucs answered with one in the third on a Kevin Riley RBI double, but he was just getting started.

Inland Valley grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Brendan Campbell crossed home plate.

The Riptide fought back with two in the seventh to regain the lead at 3-2.

The Bucs responded with two of their own in the bottom of the frame to rip the lead away for good.

Riley had his second RBI double of the day to tie it at 3-3 and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

In the ninth, things got out of hand for the Riptide as the Bucs came through with six runs.

JP Hopkins had a tw0-run knock.

Riley cranked his third double down the left field line, this time scoring two for a total of four RBI and scored his second run of the game as well.

Bryce Brooks rounded out the scoring with an RBI ground out.

Jacob Taylor hurled 2.1 innings and recorded his first victory of the season.

The Bucs travel south to Madison High School to face the San Diego Force in their regular season finale at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Bucs Sweep AOS

The Inland Valley Buccaneers (9-12-1) completed a sweep of team AOS in game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader by a count of 7-2.

The victory came on the heels of a 20-3 victory in game 1 of the doubleheader.

Much like game 1, the action started early. However, this time it was AOS jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Bucs would answer, however, as for the second time in as many games, the Bucs put up four runs in the second inning to go up by a score of 4-1.

AOS came back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning. Yet, much like the first game the Bucs answered right back in the bottom half of the inning as Jacob Taylor doubled to score Shamon Moss and gave the Bucs a 5-2 lead.

One batter later, Taylor came around to score on a fielding error as the Bucs pushed their lead to 6-2.

The Buccaneers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Shamon Moss to make it 7-2.

From there, the Bucs pitching staff held the AOS bats silent and the Bucs hung on for the 7-2 victory.

David Kretschmar was credited with the victory in relief, as he retired all six batters he faced and struck out four in his two innings of work.

Shamon Moss had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 and finishing just a home run shy of the cycle. He also scored a run and drove one in.

The Buccaneers will look to continue their winning on Monday when they take on the Long Beach Legends (Red) at Scolinos Field. First pitch is at 4:30 pm.

Bucs Crush AOS

The Inland Valley Buccaneers scored a season-high 20 runs in a 20-3 rout of Team AOS in game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader at Scolinos Field.

The win snapped a three-game skid and helped the Bucs improve to 8-12 on the season.

The Buccaneers wasted no time at all getting the offense started.

The first batter of the game, Breyer Gayle, reached base via a walk. On the very next pitch, shortstop, Kevin Riley, doubled to left scoring Gayle for the first run of the game.

The scoring continued in the second as the Buccaneers plated four runs, two of them coming on a double by Breyer Gayle.

The Bucs added two more runs to their tally as they tacked on single runs in the third and fourth on RBI singles by Shamon Moss and Breyer Gayle, to take a 7-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Bucs batted around for six runs on five hits, including RBI doubles by Jacob Taylor, Kevin Riley and Gerardo Ramirez.

In the top of the seventh, Team AOS finally managed to find their way onto the scoreboard, as they scratched across a run to make it 13-1.

The Bucs answered right back in the bottom of the seventh as Gerardo Ramirez socked his second RBI double of the contest to make it 14-1.

Three batters later, Joseph Morraele stepped up to the dish and deposited a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for a two run home run, stretching the lead to 16-1.

Just for good measure, the Bucs put up four more runs in the eighth inning to tally an even 20 runs.

AOS showed some life in the ninth, scoring two runs on a two out RBI double. However, Buccaneer newcomer, Kohto Hasegawa, settled down and struck out the final AOS batter and put a merciful end to the rout.

Chris Ghosn earned the victory in relief, giving up one run on just two hits and striking out four in his four inning of work.

Diego Cortes started the game and pitched three spotless innings, allowing just one walk and retiring 9 of the 10 batters he faced.

As for the Buccaneer offense, it was a banner day as the Bucs collected 16 hits including 9 extra-base hits. Three of those extra-base hits came off the bat of Gerardo Ramirez who went 3-for-3 on the day with three runs scored and three runs batted in.

Kevin Riley added two doubles of his own, going 2-for-4 and driving in four.
