Five-run Inning Scuttles Pirates

A five-run fourth inning scuttled the Pirates (3-4-1) as they fell 8-3 to the Orange Coast Bucs in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Dylan Stablein went seven innings and struck out three, while Jason Padlo went 1-for-3 and drove in two of the Pirates’ three runs.

The Pirates offense spun their wheels early as they had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings.

In the fourth, the Bucs erupted for five runs to take a 5-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the Pirates offense continued to sputter until an RBI single by Jason Padlo in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to 5-1.

The Bucs would answer with a run in the top of the eighth to take a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning Jeff Nellis tripled and came around to score on a Jason Padlo groundout to make it 6-2.

However, once again, the Bucs answered right back, scoring two runs in the ninth to push the lead to 8-2.

The Pirates rallied for one in the bottom of the night on a base hit by Nick Marshall, but it would prove to be too little, too late as they fell by a final count of 8-3.

Pirates Taken Away by the Riptide

The Inland Valley Pirates (3-3-1, 1-3) lost to the OC Riptide (4-6-1, 2-0) in heart-breaking fashion for the second consecutive night.

This time the Riptide came through with five runs in the ninth to take a 7-5 victory over the host Pirates at Citrus College on Saturday night.

The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jason Padlo scored on an error.

The Riptide answered with two in the sixth.

Inland Valley fought back in the eighth plating three runs to make it a 4-2 contest heading into the final frame.

Ryan Marcos singled and scored. Nick Marshall ripped a RBI single and scored. Jeff Nellis and Padlo each added one RBI.

However, on this day, it wasn’t meant to be for the Pirates as Brett Early, who pitched a stellar first eight innings allowing only two runs while striking out nine, allowed the first three in the inning to reach base.

From there, the usually steady pitching staff fell apart and hit two batters, while walking another two with the bases loaded.

The Pirates look to regroup in a non-league doubleheader against the OCC Bucs on Sunday afternoon at Citrus College.

Pirates Defeat Southern Nevada

The Inland Valley Pirates (2-0-1) defeated Southern Nevada (3-2) 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

Inland Valley’s offense was kick started by lead-off man Chaneng Varela who scored the game’s first two runs.

In the first inning Varela, who singled, scored on a RBI ripped to left field by Kyle Jackson.

In the third, Varela made it 2-0 when he was brought in by Jason Padlo’s opposite field single.

The Pirates tacked on one more in the fourth and fifth innings.

Justin Gomez doubled and scored on a RBI knock by Tyler Urbach.

Jonny Reynoso crushed the ball up the middle scoring Jeff Nellis to increase the lead to 4-0.

Southern Nevada fought until the end and plated two runs in the final frame, while having the bases loaded with two outs. Sean Patton came in relief to slam the door shut and earn the save.

Brett Early earned the win.

Pirates Tie Fire

In the second game of the doubleheader from Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday afternoon, the Pirates and Fire played to a 1-1 tie.

The game only lasted seven innings due to the length of the first contest and was called for darkness at 7:46 p.m.

The Fire scored their lone run in the third.

The Pirates answered in the fourth on Jason Padlo’s RBI sacrifice fly that scored Jeff Nellis.

Inland Valley left seven men on base in the first five innings.

The pitching was stellar throughout the game as the Pirates sent six different pitchers for this game.

Brendan Hornung started the game and tossed two shutout innings.
