OC Bucs Struggle Against BC Prospects

The OC Buccaneers (6-8) dropped a tough game to the BC Prospects on Wednesday afternoon, by a score of 3-2, despite outhitting the Prospects, 5-3.

The Prospects broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The very next inning, the Prospects scored two runs to stretch their lead to 3-0, going into the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Bucs would finally get on the board, by way of a bases loaded walk by third baseman and Bucs RBI leader, Nick Reeser.

The next batter was designated hitter, Nick Michaels, who followed with a line-drive single to right, scoring Aaron Torres and cutting the lead to 3-2.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, that’s as close as they would get as the Prospects retired 11 of the next 12 batters, including the final seven in a row, to hang on for the 3-2 victory.

The Bucs pitching staff put forth a heroic effort, despite the loss, as five pitchers combined to give up just three hits and three runs, all of which were unearned.

Bucs starter, Erik Gonzalez pitched four scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two.

Bucs relievers, Tristan Cisneros and Art Corona each struck out the side in the eighth and ninth inning respectively.

The Bucs will look to get back on the winning track as they host the So Cal Sharks at Scolinos Field Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Surf Sink OC Bucs

The Surf rallied for a  four run ninth to beat the Buccaneers, 7-4 on Thursday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Buccaneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a Nick Reeser RBI single in the bottom of the first.

Buccaneer starter, Kohto Hasegawa held the Surf scoreless through the first two innings before surrendering an RBI single in the top of the 3rd. On the afternoon, Hasegawa went 3+ innings and gave up a run on two hits and struck out two batters.

The score remained tied at one until the seventh inning when Surf shortstop, Jake Ortega scored.

The Bucs answered in the bottom of the inning when David Grubaugh  ripped a two out, two run double, giving the Bucs a 3-2 lead.

The Surf tied the game in the top of the eighth on a check swing, RBI single by Tyler Gnesda that scooted right past first baseman, Jarrett Anton to drive in a run.

However, back to back doubles by Jacob Blackiston and Nick Reeser in the bottom of the inning, put the Bucs back in front 4-3 heading into the ninth.

That’s where it all went south for the Bucs.

It began with a leadoff single by George Medina off of Bucs reliever, Art Corona. The next batter

reached on a throwing error putting runners at first and second with nobody out. After a fielder’s choice ground ball put runners at the corners with one away, Corona got the next batter to line out to short for the second out.

Then with two outs, Surf left fielder, Cole Malloy, lined a double down the right field line to drive in the tying run from third. The very next at-bat, center fielder, Kory Weeks would deliver the decisive blow in the form of a two-run triple to left. The Surf would tack on an insurance run and they held on to knock off the Bucs by a final of 7-4.

Surf reliever, Jacob Hoffman gets credit with the victory, while Bucs reliever, Art Corona gets saddled with the loss as well as a blown save. Dominic Bastone recorded the save.

Third baseman, Nick Reeser went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. He reached base in all four of his plate appearances.

Bucs reliever Erik Gonzalez pitched three scoreless innings in relief, giving up no hits and striking out five.

The Bucs will look to rebound tomorrow as they take on the Waves from No Limit Baseball Academy at 4:30 pm at Cal Poly Pomona.
